All foreign travelers should have specific permits and documents to go the trekking in Nepalese Himalayas. The requirements and fees vary for each trekking region. Children below ten years old are not required to purchase these permits. Most trekking routes in Nepal are located in protected areas. Mostly those protected areas for environmental or cultural purposes, from national parks and conservation areas to restricted areas. All f those foreign trekkers who suppose to trek in Restricted Areas are required to trek with a Nepali guide or porter registered with the government-affiliated trekking agencies and have special trekking permits
(The Department of Immigration located at Kalikasthan, Dillibazar, Kathmandu (Tel : 977 – 1 – 4429659 / 4429660 / 4438862 / 4438868 Fax : 977 – 1 – 4433934 /4433935 Email : [email protected] Web : http://www.nepalimmigration.gov.np) issues permit for foreign tourists who intend to trek in restricted/controlled areas of Nepal. A trekking permit is a must to travel to controlled areas mentioned below. Permit, however, is issued only to groups. Individual trekkers will not be issued trekking permits.)
However, if you are planning to trek in other non-restricted areas such as national parks and conservation areas, it is also possible you can go on your own. It is doable to trek alone or without a local support/guide, but you need to know what to do in extreme weather conditions, zero visibility and plunging temperatures at possibly 5,000m? Make sure you have all the necessary permits and be aware of the environment and local culture.
Hiring a guide or porter does not mean that you are weak, it means you value the Nepali culture, you are providing an extended Nepali family with an income and at the same time, you are making a friend and trekking with a local person who is well-known in the local cultures, festivals, and all the other issues that can turn a good trek into an amazing experience of a lifetime.
